When you’re working on designing a room, size definitely matters. If you’re working with a smaller space, you have to put a bit more thought into planning the layout in order to make sure everything flows perfectly. It can be a lot easier to decorate larger spaces, really because you have more room to work with, so there’s less worry that the end result will feel cluttered or cramped. You have more options when it comes to furniture size and layout design, and it’s easier to make rooms feel spacious and airy.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t make a small room look totally stunning. You absolutely can! Just look at all the beautiful tiny homes on the market! Those designers know the keys to making smaller spaces look cozy, relaxing, and plenty spacious. There might be more to consider, but decorating small spaces can be fun, and an exercise in creativity.
Just make sure you’re doing these 4 things to get the most out of your space:
1. Don’t buy furniture that’s too large- One of the biggest mistakes people make when decorating small spaces is buying furniture that doesn’t fit the room. Large couches and coffee tables can really make a small living room look clutter. Rely on smaller pieces, like ottomans, and a couch that fits, to give the space a bit of breathing room.
2. Keep seating close together and intimate- Spacing everything too far apart is another sure way to make your space look cramped. Instead, if you lean into the smallness of the space, you can achieve a cozy look that doesn’t feel too-close-for-comfort. Instead, it will feel welcoming!
3. Paint the walls white- Light colors, especially on the walls can make a space feel open. So, don’t make the mistake of going too dark. You can achieve a much roomier feel by look to white, off-white, or other warm, light colors when picking out paint.
4. Let the light in- Natural light, when available, is one of the easiest ways to achieve the feeling of spaciousness. If there are opportunities to let the light filter in, or play up the natural light in an area, use it! It’s the best budget addition around!
